About Golden Butterfly Bakers

Humble Beginnings

When Jan Vogel retired from her work as a software designer at CGI, she knew she wanted to bake. After all, she’d had a cookie ministry at her church for some 25 years, and baking was not only relaxing but virtually a spiritual practice for her. And she was skilled at it. But she never envisioned that she would retire to create a charity that donates nearly 400,000 cookies, muffins, biscuits and other treats each year to the homeless, to women and children in shelters, to people in addiction recovery programs, and to people involved in prison ministries.

Founded in 2020, Golden Butterfly Bakers has gone from being a retirement project to something much bigger than ever intended. Today it is making a difference in the lives of thousands of recipients of our baked goods!

We believe God calls us to show kindness and share with those in need, and you can join us in this work, by volunteering to prepare baked goods, praying for the marginalized, and by making a financial gift.

Amazing Growth

A year after our founding in 2020 we had 3 recipients. Today we have 12 recipients who on a weekly basis receive about 6,000 cookies, 500 muffins, and 800 biscuits. Our mission is supported by a team of dedicated volunteers who get these baked goods prepared and delivered each week, including the “Biscuit Ladies” and “Muffin Men” teams. They are a blessing to Golden Butterfly Bakers.

All of the baked goods are made by volunteers in a certified commercial kitchen under the direction of our founder. The baked goods are donated to the targeted Houston based recipient organizations at no cost.

In addition to our weekly production, we also prepare cookies for 8 Kairos prison ministry weekends each Spring and Fall, a total of about 3,000 dozen (36,000!) cookies.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER

Our Recipients Include:

Established non-profit organizations in the Houston area that provide services to the homeless.

Established non-profit organizations in the Houston area that provide transitional housing for youth and adults previously homeless and/or in addiction recovery.

Kairos Prison Ministry International, Inc. a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit corporation. Kairos is a three-day Christian event that is completed in the prison by teams of volunteers.

We work with organizations to discover how we might best support their mission with our baked goods. For example, our discussions with the Mission of Yahweh led to the delivery of cookies and biscuits on a weekly basis to provide the women and children sheltering there with a taste of "home."
